Motivational Interviewing 1: Mechanics & Processes

Date: October 10th, 2019
Time: 8:45am-12:00pm
CEUs: 3.0
CEU Type(s): Behavioral Health, Social Work

This class looks at the nature of common conversations where ambivalence and reluctance about behavior change is the main theme. In these conversations it is easy to play the role of the expert and tell the person what they need to do in order to improve their situation. The problem is that this often provokes resistance in the ambivalent person, and as they voice the reasons not to change, it reduces the likelihood of behavior change. While accounting for the change and the stage of change of the person, this class presents an alternative guiding style for these conversations using Miller and Rollnick’s “OARS” skills.
