Participants can use nonverbal and verbal strategies to help de-escalate people in crisis. Using clinical and nonclinical examples, this class examines the physiology of crises and the role of stress in people’s decision-making. Using role-play and a high level of interaction, the class presents: nonverbal communication; things not to say; why de-escalation skills are important; why getting defensive makes it worse; accepting criticism; using reflective responses; stating your support; labeling emotions; validating; apologizing; offering to help; setting limits skillfully.
