Class Description

This class examines the relationship between compassion satisfaction and fatigue and focuses on how practitioners in the helping professions can build resilience both within and beyond the workday. The class looks at the possible cumulative effects of secondary traumatic stress, shared trauma, the constant demands of others and other life stresses in the formation of compassion fatigue. Since helping work is relational, the effects of compassion fatigue reduce a worker’s ability to empathically relate to the person they are helping, desensitizing them, and reducing their effectiveness. Through the proactive adoption of resilience promoting strategies, a worker can circumvent this process and achieve fulfillment in their work.
