Brinking is a balancing action between the terrible and the wonderful, the godly and the unspeakable, life and death.

Freedom Behind Bars is a sculptural relief that describes my experience in St. Joseph’s hospital psych ward where I spent the entire year of 1980. This is when Holy Spirit came to me represented by doves in the sculpture, and gave me a new way to see intensified color and unbounded feeling of inspiration and energy to create artwork.

This painting came to me as a vision- jeweled cantaloupe on the vine. In the background are ghosts of insects, which were in the vision too.

This painting is an intuitive experiment in layering sheer colors. It’s an owl blinking in the light of dawn.

Riding the brink is a thrilling and terrifying state of being with one foot in the terrible and one in the wonderful, one part of me in the illusion of control, the other wildly out of control, one eye looking at life, one eye immersed in great mystery.
