Mental Health & Community Health Amid COVID-19

March 18, 2020

We care about you. Your mental health matters, and we understand that news of the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Minnesota may be triggering or worsening symptoms of anxiety or depression. Here are five tips for supporting your mental health during uncertain times.

**Important** While coping with stress, anxiety, and isolation — it is difficult for all of us during the coronavirus outbreak — it can be even more pronounced if someone lives with mental illness.

  1. Social distancing doesn’t have to mean social isolating. Check in with your family and friends. Take time to call and talk to someone. Text a friend. Skype or FaceTime a loved one. Human connection is important. Rely on your support systems.
  2. Limit your news and social media consumption. It is natural to want to understand what is happening in the world around us, but over-consumption can also lead to worsening mental health symptoms. If you find yourself struggling with what might happen or what is happening around the globe, take a break and bring yourself back to the present. This is a great opportunity to practice mindfulness and meditation.
  3. Exercise. Whether it’s a walk in the park or YouTube yoga — moving your body will support both your physical and mental health.
  4. Focus on what you can control. Washing your hands and managing your environment. Pay special attention to your own immunity by staying rested and by eating well. Limit group interactions. Practice and share positive thinking.
  5. Support people who are struggling by giving. People Incorporated continues to support individuals experiencing mental health challenges during the coronavirus outbreak. You can help us provide these essential services by making a donation now.
