We provide services to Deaf people with developmental disabilities and mental illness, teaching independent living skills, providing leisure activities and making sure our people are safe. We also work provide experiences that allow these individuals to lead enjoyable, meaningful lives.
Who we serve
Waivered Services serves people who are Deaf and developmentally disabled with mental illness, some with challenging behaviors.
The goals we set
Our clients are here to learn to be as independent as possible in their daily lives. Each person has a program plan that sets goals that the client and family members hope can be achieved. The plan includes basic living skills, social and recreational skills.
Services we provide
We provide 24 hours- 7 days/week supervision with staff awake around the clock. We have a skilled, competent staff that have signing skills to allow us to provide services to deaf clients who have challenging behaviors by using crisis intervention/prevention method. Staff administrate medication to clients, monitoring clients’ health, transportation to and from medical appointments as well as consulting nursing staff available on weekly basis. We provide scheduled activities and outings to enrich clients’ social and community integration skills and provide a signing environment to meet each clients’ needs. We also teach independent living skills that includes cooking, laundry and cleaning as part of their goals.
About our location
Upton House provides a home-like setting close to parks, shopping, restaurants, and sport activities. We try to promote normalization by doing what most people do throughout their day and giving clients the opportunities to make choices in their lives.
About the process
Referrals come from Hennepin County, social workers, and community team members. We also receive referrals from people outside our organization like job coaches and teachers who have students seeking the support our program provides.
About our fees
The client must be screened for waivered services funding and the rate set includes both program and room and board. Each person’s SSI or SSDI contributes to this daily rate.
About our staff
Our staff is either Deaf or hearing and all are fluent in sign language. We provide ongoing training in the areas of First Aid, CPR, communication skills, and behavior management.
Hours of operation
Upton House operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
Licensing
We are licensed by Hennepin County as an Adult Foster Care Facility and members of the Association for Residential Resources of Minnesota (ARRM).
