Non-violent Crisis Intervention
This course is a product of the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI), which is an internationally-recognized organization providing training to human service providers, health care, education, law enforcement and corrections. Taught by an accredited CPI instructor, the class is a general overview of how to deal with clients that are escalating and have the potential to become violent. It includes verbal interventions, listening skills, nonverbal interventions, what to do after the crisis, as well as some basic self-defense strategies. The course is designed to provide for the care, welfare, safety and security of everyone in a crisis situation. (6 hours; Social Work CEU*)

Motivational Interviewing
This class is designed to disseminate information presented by Dr. David Mee-Lee at People Incorporated in October 2007. The class will include a review of the principles of motivational interviewing along with its role in IMR (Illness Management and Recovery) and the Stages of Change model. At least half of the class will involve practical role-play and practice of the principles in relevant situations. (3 hours; Social Work CEU*)

De-escalation 101
This class is an overview of basic de-escalation techniques. Discussion includes when to call for help, when to call 911, and formulation of a basic crisis plan for dangerous situations, and staff’s role in de-escalation. Fourteen different de-escalation techniques will be introduced and practiced, with the focus on returning the client to rational thinking and move forward to a solution. (3 hours; Social Work CEU*; televideo possible)

De-escalation 201
This class builds upon De-escalation 101, focusing in greater depth on anger and how to manage it. The aim is to give participants a set of skills that they can use themselves, but also teach to clients who have anger issues. This class is based heavily on role-play. The De-escalation 101 class is not a pre-requisite but it is useful. (3 hours; Social Work CEU*)

Boundaries and Ethics 1
Participants discover and practice using three decision-making tools for ethical dilemmas, focusing on how to make decisions, what guidelines to use for drawing boundaries, and putting “tools” in one’s “toolbox.” Participants will share tips for establishing and maintaining effective boundaries, as well as self-care techniques outside of work. (3 hours; Social Work CEU*; televideo possible)

Boundaries and Ethics 2
This class follows on from Boundaries and Ethics 1, and introduces two further decision-making tools, which will be analyze and practiced as a group. The goal is to encourage each participant to develop structured and rational ways of problem-solving in order to gain confidence in one’s ability to make good decisions in most work situations. Discussion will also include ways to develop therapeutic rapport with a client without crossing professional boundaries. (3 hours; Social Work CEU*; televideo possible)
