People Incorporated celebrated our 40th anniversary in grand style at our Annual Luncheon on June 11, 2009, at the Metropolitan Ballroom in Golden Valley. Over 450 attendees helped to mark the occasion, which featured a special 40th anniversary video presentation and a keynote address by mental health advocate and author Kathy Cronkite, who spoke on erasing the stigma of mental illness.
KARE 11 Anchor/Reporter Rena Sarigianopoulos served as master of ceremonies, and special guests included founders Harry Maghakian and George Knieremen, People Incorporated’s first executive director, Don Bump, and representatives from the five churches that helped establish People Incorporated in 1969. State Senator Ellen Anderson, chair of the Advisory Council presented an award to her colleague Linda Berglin, for her support during the past legislative session. CEO Tim Burkett, Ph.D., presented an award to Charles Schulz, M.D., for his leadership in promoting community psychiatry and for partnering with People Incorporated on the Safe Havens for people with mental illness who are experiencing homelessness. A special award was also presented to former U.S. Representative Jim Ramstad for his work on behalf of people with mental illness, including passage of the Paul Wellstone Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act in 2008.
Kathy Cronkite’s appearance and production of the video are thanks to special grants from the Katherine B. Andersen Fund of the Saint Paul Foundation. Event sponsors also included the Bremer Foundation, the Minnesota Psychological Association, and 3M. Thanks to all our sponsors and those who attended for making our Annual Luncheon such a memorable event!

House-to-Home Raises $35,400 for People Incorporated Programs |

People Incorporated’s third annual House-to-Home event lit up the night with some down-home bluegrass music—and warmed up the homes of People Incorporated clients by raising over $35,400 to buy furniture for People Incorporated residential programs. Held on October 30 at the Midland Hills Country Club in St. Paul, the 124 attendees pledged funds to purchase sofas, dining tables, beds, chairs, lamps, and other furnishings to make our residential programs more comfortable and hope-inspiring for the people who call them home. The evening included a Southern-style dinner buffet and music from Minnesota’s premier bluegrass band, Monroe Crossing. The event was made possible in part through the generosity of HOM Furniture, which provides a discount on furniture purchases. Thank you to everyone who helped make House-to-Home another smashing success, especially committee chair Margee Klas Johnson!
